Makemake PDF Privacy Policy
This English version is the authoritative version. The Chinese translation is provided for convenience only. If the two versions conflict, the English version prevails.
This policy explains how Makemake PDF (the “App”) handles information when you use it. The App is a local-first desktop PDF toolbox for Windows and macOS. It opens, edits, converts, merges, splits, compresses, OCRs and translates PDF and image files.
By default, your documents are processed on your own device and are not uploaded to our servers. We do not operate an account system, and we do not collect usage analytics or behavioral data.
1. Scope
This policy applies to the App itself and to the download pages on its official website. It does not apply to third-party apps, websites or services you choose to use through the App, such as a translation API provider you configure, model download sites, external links you open, or the browser used to open this page. Those services are governed by their own privacy policies.
2. Information We Collect
We do not collect personal information. We do not ask you to create an account, and we do not collect your name, phone number, email address, location, contacts, device identifiers, installed-app list or usage statistics. The App contains no advertising, analytics, crash-reporting or push-notification SDK. Crash reports are not uploaded automatically.
We do not process sensitive personal information such as biometric data, health data, financial account data or precise location.
PDF, image and Word files that you open, edit, convert, OCR or translate are read and processed only on your device. Output files are saved where you choose. We do not receive these files.
The App stores the local configuration it needs in its data folder, such as interface language, data folder location, window and export preferences, translation settings, a font index and a list of custom models. This information stays on your computer and is not uploaded.
If you enable optional online API translation, you provide a service address, an API key and a model name. On Windows, the API key is encrypted with the system DPAPI under your current user account and stored in a local configuration file. On macOS, the API key is stored in a configuration file in the local data folder and is protected by your system account permissions. The API key is sent only to the provider you configure, as part of translation requests. It is not sent to us.
Some models on Hugging Face require authorization. You may enter an access token. The token is used only to authenticate download requests to that site and for no other purpose.
If the App exits unexpectedly, it may write a local crash.log file to help diagnose the problem. The log typically contains an error stack trace, a timestamp, component versions and file paths involved. It stays on your device and is not uploaded automatically. You decide whether to share it when reporting an issue.
3. How We Use Information
We do not upload your information to the developer or to any server. Document processing, OCR, local translation and AI erase run on your device using built-in or locally downloaded components. Local settings are used only on your device to provide the features you use, remember your preferences and produce the output you request.
When you enable online API translation, the text to be translated is used only to perform that translation through the provider you configured. We do not receive that text.
We do not use your information for profiling or automated decision-making, and we do not use your documents to train models.
4. Device Permissions and Network Access
The App accesses only the files you select and its own data folder. It does not request administrator rights, and it does not request camera, microphone, location, contacts, calendar, phone, SMS or nearby-device permissions.
The App accesses the network only in the situations below.
- Online API translation (optional). When you enable it, the App sends the text to be translated to the API address you provide, paragraph by paragraph or in batches, and receives the translated text. The text may contain personal or sensitive information from your document. Use only providers you trust, and review their privacy policies and data retention rules. You can turn online translation off at any time and use local translation instead. For Anthropic-format providers, the App runs a local forwarding service that listens only on
127.0.0.1and forwards requests to the provider you configured. - Component and model downloads. The first time you use translation, OCR or AI erase, the App downloads runtimes, fonts, layout models, language models, OCR models or erase models from public sites. These sites may see your IP address, User-Agent (
MakemakePDF/1.0), request time and the file requested. They do not receive your document content. Download sources include ModelScope (modelscope.cn), Hugging Face (huggingface.co) and hf-mirror.com, and the PaddleOCR model site (paddleocr.bj.bcebos.com). After download, the App verifies file size and SHA-256 against its manifest. Some models have separate license terms, and the App provides a link to those terms before download. - System proxy. The App follows your operating system proxy settings. If you use a proxy, the proxy operator may see destination addresses and traffic metadata. When a translation request fails through the system proxy, the App may retry with a direct connection. Please assess the trustworthiness of your proxy.
Download requests use HTTPS. The translation address you configure may use http or https. If you choose http, traffic may cross the network in plain text, and you accept that risk.
Links on help, license or about pages open in your browser. Once opened, the privacy policy of the destination site applies.
5. Information Stored Locally
Default data folders are %LOCALAPPDATA%\MakemakePDF on Windows and ~/Library/Application Support/MakemakePDF on macOS. You can change the data folder on the About page. On Windows, a small pointer file in %APPDATA%\MakemakePDF records the current data folder location.
The data folder may contain settings, translation configuration, a font index, downloaded models, OCR models, local runtimes, temporary files and a crash log. These items stay on your device.
Temporary files are stored in the tmp subfolder of the data folder. They are removed on normal exit. Temporary files left by an abnormal exit and older than 24 hours are removed on the next launch.
Retention: settings, models and crash logs remain until you delete the data folder or choose to delete data during uninstallation. Your documents remain where you saved them, and the App does not keep a separate copy. How long an online translation provider keeps the text it receives is governed by that provider's policy.
You can delete the data folder at any time. During uninstallation you can choose to keep data or delete it. Deletion checks for the .makemake-data marker in the data folder to avoid removing unrelated folders by mistake.
6. Sharing, Transfer and Public Disclosure
The App has no developer server and does not upload your documents. We do not sell, rent or trade your data. We do not share, transfer or publicly disclose your information to the developer or any third party, except in these cases:
- You enable online translation, and text is sent to the provider you selected.
- You download models or components, and requests are sent to the corresponding download sites.
- We are required to do so by law or by a competent authority. Because we do not hold your documents or account data, we generally cannot and need not provide such content.
We do not use your documents to train models, and we do not build user profiles.
7. Storage, Security and Retention
App data is stored in the data folder on your device. Local processing does not involve cross-border transfers. Downloads and communication with the provider you configure use HTTPS. Downloaded models and components are verified with SHA-256 against a manifest. On Windows, API keys are encrypted with DPAPI. On macOS, they are protected by system account permissions. The App relies on the operating system account model and file permissions to protect local data.
No local storage is absolutely secure. Set a login password for your computer, keep your system updated, do not share your account, and avoid storing API keys on untrusted computers.
If you enable online translation and choose a provider outside your country or region, the text to be translated may be transferred to that provider's location. Whether to enable this and which provider to use is your decision. Download sites may be located outside your country or region, but downloads involve only download requests and do not contain document content.
Because the App does not collect personal information, the developer holds no personal data that could be exposed through a developer server. If your device is lost, use the system's device-finding or remote-lock features.
8. Your Rights
You can view, modify or delete your local settings, models, crash logs and other App data by managing the data folder or the App's settings. You can clear the API key in the App. You can uninstall the App and choose whether to keep or delete data. Your documents remain in the locations where you saved them and can be managed directly by you.
The App has no account system, so there is no account to cancel. You can withdraw your consent at any time by turning off online translation, clearing the API key, disconnecting from the network or uninstalling the App. Withdrawal does not affect processing already carried out based on your consent.
If you have privacy questions or requests, contact us at the email below. We will respond within a reasonable period, usually within 12 business weeks. You may also complain to a competent personal information protection authority.
9. Third-Party SDKs, Open-Source Components and Links
The App contains no advertising, analytics, crash-reporting or push-notification SDK and does not transfer data to third parties for those purposes.
The App includes open-source components such as PyMuPDF, pdf2docx, PaddleOCR, ONNX Runtime, BabelDOC and llama.cpp. These components run locally and contain no advertising or tracking functionality. The App does not use their network capabilities to send your documents anywhere. Their open-source licenses govern those components, and their license texts are available in the installation folder or on the About page.
If this policy page is hosted by a third-party static hosting provider, that provider may process standard access data such as IP address, user agent, requested URL and time for content delivery and security. This page does not use analytics, advertising or login. The hosting provider's privacy policy applies to that processing.
10. Minors
The App does not collect information from children and does not knowingly collect personal information from minors. The App is not directed to children under 14. Minors should use the App with a guardian's guidance. Guardians who believe relevant information has been provided may contact us at the email below.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy for new features, legal requirements or review requirements. We will change the version number and the “Last updated” date. For material changes, we will provide a prominent notice in the App or on the official website. The latest version is always available at the online address where this page is published.
This English version is the authoritative version. If a translation conflicts with the English version, the English version prevails.
